The Rock of the "Unknown"

From the sanctuary of the little valley, one can climb to the Rock where Saint Jerome had definitely systematized his orphanage. Through a track by the side and spiralling through much green nature, one arrives at the height of the castle which tradition attributes to the Unknown of the novel “The Betrothed”

Before entering the castle, on the right is constructed an oratory dedicated to Saint Ambrose, a saint very much beloved to Saint Jerome and his first companions.

.

In the level opening, a big cross is raised as a sign of salvation, there where with the incanting voice of Lucia, Alessandro Manzoni, devoted to Saint Jerome ( Manzoni being an ex-alumnus of the Somascan fathers) resounded: “God forgives many things for an act of mercy”.

Inside the castle one sees the last little chapel, which recalls the miraculous multiplication of bread done by Saint Jerome.

From the rock one enjoys a splendid panorama, in which the blue of the lake shines bluer, the mountain green is greener, the cities line up and the waves of “that branch of the lake of Como” untie themselves in a magical dance…the very incantation that Manzoni rendered famous in his novel.
