Mother of Orphans

The photo of the feast of september 30, 2007

Leaving the Basilica, if one takes the track leading to his right. After a short trek on the narrow street, there is a little Church dedicated to Mary Mother of Orphans.

The Church is small and simple. On top of the alter one can admire the beautiful statue of Mary surrounded by three little orphans, with Saint Jerome at her feet in the act of prayers.

The statue is of wood from Val Gardena, it is the work of the sculptor Santifaller… It was crowned on the 19 September, 1954 by Cardinal Federico Tedeschini.

The alter in marble under the statue was consecrated by the Patriarch of Venice, Cardinal Angelo Roncalli (Blessed John XXIII) in September 1953.

At the right of the alter, there is a little room segregated by an iron gate. This room is the humble little place in which Saint Jerome died on 8 February, 1537.

Framed and protected by a crystal is the great cross of red colour which Saint Jerome designed by his same hands at the moment of his death.

Above the presbytery, there are two paintings, one shows Saint Jerome with his companions and the other shows the death of Saint Jerome.
